4. Sistem periodik Mendeleev
Pada tahun 1869 seorang sarjana asal rusia bernama Dmitri Ivanovich mendeleev, berdasarkan pengamata terhadap 63 unsur yang sudah dikenal ketika itu, menyimpulkan bahwa sifat-sifat unsur adalah fungsi periodik dari massa atom relatifnya. Artinya, jika unsur-unsur disusunmenurut kenaikan massa atom relatifnya, maka sifat tertentu akan berulang secara periodik. Mendeleev menempatkan unsur-unsur yang mempunyai kemiripan sifat dalam satu lajur vertikal yang disebut golongan. Lajur-lajur horizontal, yaitu lajur unsur-unsur berdasarkan kenaikan massa atom relatifnya, disebut priode daftar periodik Mendeleev yang dipublikasikan tahun 1872. Sebagaimana dapat dilihat pada gambar di atas, Mendeleev mengkosongkan beberapa tempat. Hal itu dilakukan untuk menetapkan kemiripan sifat dalam golongan. Sebagai contoh, Mendelev menempatkan Ti (Ar = 48 ) pada golongan IV dan membiarkan golongan III kosong karena Ti lebih mirip dengan C dan Si, dari pada dengan B dan Al. Mendeleev meramalkan dari sifat unsur yang belum di kenal itu. Perkiraan tersebut didasarkan pada sifat unsurlain yang sudah dikenal, yang letaknya berdampingan baik secara mendatar maupun secara tegak. Ketika unsur yang diramalkan itu ditemukan, teryata sifatnya sangat sesuai dengan ramalan mendeleev. Salah satu contoh adalah germanium ( Ge ) yang ditemukan pada tahun 1886, yang oleh Mendeleev dinamai ekasilikon.
Kelemahan dari teori ini adalah masih terdapat unsur-unsur yang massanya lebih besar letaknya di depan unsur yang massanya lebih kecil. Co : Telurium (te) = 128 di kiriIodin (I)= 127. hal ini dikarenakan unsur yang mempunyai kemirpan sifat diletakkan dalam satu golongan. Kelemahan dari teori ini adalah pemebetulanmassa atom. Sebelumnya massa atom. Sebelumnya massa atom In = 76 menjadi 113. selain itu Be, dari 13,5 menjadi 9. U dari 120 menjadi 240 . selain itu kelebihannya adalah peramalan unsur baru yakni meramalkan unsur beseerta sifat-sifatnya.

Sistem Periodik Modern

Sistem periodik Modern disusun berdasarkan kenaikan nomor atom. Dalam sistem periodik modern terdapatKotak untuk tiap unsur yang mengandung informasi dasar.

Periode adalah lajur mendatar (horizontal), unsur- unsur dalam satu periode memiliki jumlah kulit elektron yang sama.

Golongan adalah lajur dari atas ke bawah (vertikal), Unsur-unsur dalam satu golongan pada umumnya memiliki sifat kimia yang mirip, hal ini dikarenakan memiliki elektron valensi yang sama.

Deret lantanida sebenarnya terdapat pada periode ke-6 dan golongan IIIB, antara nomor 56 sampai 71. Pada umumnya unsur-unsur pada deret ini mempunyai sifat yang mirip dengan unsur lantanium sehingga disebut deret lantanida.

Deret Aktinida sebenarnya terdapat pada periode ke-7 dan golongan IIIB, antara nomor 89 sampai 103. Pada umumnya unsur-unsur pada deret ini mempunyai sifat yang mirip dengan unsur aktinium sehingga disebut deret


Dari tabel di atas ternyata elektron valensi menunjukkan letak golongan pada sistem periodik. Sedangkan periode ditentukan oleh jumlah kulit atau nomor kulit. Jadi, unsur-unsur dalam satu periode mempunyai nomor kulit yang sama.
Dalam tulisan ini, kita akan mempelajari cara menyatakan massa sebuah atom dan molekul, serta mempelajari hubungan antara massa zat dengan jumlah partikel yang dimilikinya melalui pendekatan konsep mol.
Massa sebuah atom bergantung pada jumlah elektron, proton, dan neutron yang dimilikinya. Atom adalah partikel yang sangat kecil, sehingga kita tidak dapat menimbang massa sebuah atom tunggal. Akan tetapi, kita dapat menentukan massa suatu atom dengan membandingkannya terhadap atom lain. Dengan demikian, dibutuhkan suatu unsur yang dapat dijadikan sebagai standar pembanding.
Massa atom didefinisikan sebagai massa suatu atom dalam satuanatomic mass unit (amu) atau satuan massa atom (sma). Satu amudidefinisikan sebagai 1/12 kali massa satu atom C-12. Karbon-12 adalah salah satu isotop karbon yang memiliki 6 proton dan 6 neutron. Unsur ini dijadikan sebagai standar pembanding sebab unsur ini memiliki sifat yang sangat stabil dengan waktu paruh yang panjang. Dengan menetapkan massa atom C-12 sebesar 12 sma, kita dapat menentukan massa atom unsur lainnya. Sebagai contoh, diketahui bahwa satu atom hidrogen hanya memiliki massa 8,4% dari massa satu atom C-12. Dengan demikian, massa satu atom hidrogen adalah sebesar 8,4% x 12 sma atau 1,008 sma. Dengan perhitungan serupa, dapat diperoleh massa satu atom oksigen adalah 16,00 sma dan massa satu atom besi adalah 55,85 sma. Hal ini berarti bahwa satu atom besi memiliki massa hampir 56 kali massa satu atom hidrogen.
Massa atom relatif (Ar) suatu unsur X dapat diperoleh melalui persamaan berikut:
Ar X = massa satu atom unsur X / (1/12) x massa satu atom C-12
Selain menghitung massa atom relatif (Ar) suatu unsur, kita dapat juga menentukan massa molekul relatif (Mr) suatu senyawa. Massa molekul relatif (Mr) suatu senyawa dapat diperoleh melalui persamaan berikut:
Mr X = massa 1 molekul senyawa X / (1/12) x massa satu atom C-12
Bobot (massa) setiap atom dapat ditemukan dalam tabel periodik, sehingga massa suatu molekul dapat diperoleh dengan cara menambahkan massa setiap atom di dalam senyawa tersebut. Sebagai contoh, air, H2O, tersusun atas dua atom hidrogen dan satu atom oksigen. Dengan melihat pada tabel periodik, kita dapat melihat bahwa massa satu atom hidrogen sama dengan 1,008 sma dan massa satu atom oksigen adalah 16,00 sma. Dengan demikian, massa satu molekul air dapat diperoleh dengan menjumlahkan massa dua atom hidrogen dan massa satu atom oksigen.
Mr H2O = 2 x Ar H + 1 x Ar O = 2 x 1,008 + 1 x 16,00 = 18,016 sma
Contoh lain, pada tabel periodik, kita dapat melihat bahwa massa satu atom tembaga adalah 63,55 sma dan massa satu atom belerang adalah 32,07 sma. Sementara massa satu atom oksigen adalah 16,00 sma, sementara massa satu atom hidrogen adalah 1,008 sma. Dengan demikian, massa satu molekul CuSO4.5H2O adalah sebagai berikut:
Mr CuSO4.5H2O = 1 x Ar Cu + 1 x Ar S + 4 x Ar O + 5 x Mr H2O
= 1 x Ar Cu + 1 x Ar S + 4 x Ar O + 5 x (2 x Ar H + 1 X Ar O)
= 1 x 63,55 + 1 x 32,07 + 4 x 16,00 + 5 x (2 x 1,008 + 1 x 16,00)
= 249,700 sma
Saat kita melihat massa atom relatif karbon pada tabel periodik, ternyata massa atom relatif karbon tidak tepat 12,00 sma, melainkan 12,01 sma. Perbedaan ini disebabkan oleh kehadiran unsur karbon di alam dalam berbagai bentuk isotop. Hal ini berarti, massa atom suatu unsur harus dinyatakan dalam bentuk nilai rata-ratanya.
Sebagai contoh, kelimpahan karbon-12 dan karbon-13 di alam masing-masing sebesar 98,90% dan 1,10%. Massa atom relatif unsur C-13 adalah 13,00335 sma. Dengan demikian, massa atom relatif rata-rata atom karbon adalah 98,90% x 12,00 sma + 1,10% x 13,00335 sma = 12,01 sma. Dengan demikian, massa atom relatif atom karbon adalah 12,01 sma. Nilai rata-rata inilah yang ditampilkan sebagai massa atom relatif unsur pada tabel periodik.
Contoh lain, unsur tembaga di alam berada dalam dua bentuk isotop, yaitu Cu-63 dan Cu-65. Kelimpahan masing-masing di alam adalah sebesar 69,09% untuk Cu-63 dan 30,91% untuk Cu-65. Massa atom relatif masing-masing isotop adalah 62,93 sma (Cu-63) dan 64,9278 sma (Cu-65). Massa atom relatif rata-rata atom tembaga adalah 69,09% x 62,93 sma + 30,91% x 64,9278 sma = 63,55 sma. Dengan demikian, massa atom relatif atom tembaga pada tabel periodik adalah 63,55 sma.
Ketika para kimiawan berhubungan dengan atom dan molekul, mereka memerlukan satuan yang sesuai yang dapat digunakan untuk ukuran atom dan molekul yang sangat kecil. Satuan ini disebut mol. Dalam sistem SI, mol adalah kuantitas yang digunakan untuk menunjukkan bahwa suatu zat memiliki jumlah atom, molekul, maupun ion, yang sama dengan jumlah atom yang dimiliki oleh 12 gram isotop karbon-12. Jumlah atom yang dimiliki oleh 12 gram isotop karbon-12 ditentukan melalui suatu eksperimen dan bilangan ini dikenal dengan istilah Bilangan Avogadro (NA). Nilai yang diterima saat ini sebagai Bilangan Avogadro adalah sebagai berikut:
NA = 6,0221367 x 1023 (biasanya dibulatkan menjadi 6,022 x 1023)
Hal ini berarti bahwa setiap 1 mol zat apapun, baik atom, molekul, maupun ion, akan memiliki 6,022 x 1023 atom, molekul, maupun ion.
Sebelumnya, kita telah mengetahui bahwa satu mol isotop C-12 memiliki massa sebesar 12 gram serta 6,022 x 1023 atom C-12. Massa yang dimiliki oleh satu mol zat disebut massa molar (massa molekul relatif atau Mr untuk senyawa; massa atom relatif atau Ar untuk unsur). Dapat dicermati bahwa massa molar (Ar) isotop C-12 sama dengan massa atom relatifnya dalam satuan sma. Dengan demikian, massa atom relatif suatu unsur (dalam satuan sma) mewakili massa satu mol unsur bersangkutan (dalam satuan gram).
Sebagai contoh, massa atom relatif unsur Na adalah 22,99 sma. Ini berarti, massa satu mol unsur Na adalah 22,99 gram. Di dalam 22,99 gram unsur Na terdapat 6,022 x 1023 atom Na. Bila kita memiliki unsur Na sebanyak 114,95 gram, maka akan setara dengan 114,95 gram/ 22,99 (gram/mol) atau 5 mol unsur Na. Dengan demikian, jumlah atom yang dimiliki oleh 114,95 gram unsur Na (setara dengan 5 mol unsur Na) adalah 5 x 6,022 x 1023 atom Na.
Dengan mengetahui massa molar dan Bilangan Avogadro, kita dapat menghitung massa satu atom dalam satuan gram. Sebagai contoh, telah kita ketahui bersama bahwa massa molar C-12 adalah 12,00 gram dan terdapat 6,022 x 1023 atom C-12 dalam satu mol unsur tersebut. Dengan demikian, massa satu atom C-12 adalah sebagai berikut:
12,00 gram atom C-12 / 6,022 x 1023 atom C-12 = 1,993 x 10-23gram
Telah diketahui pula bahwa massa satu atom C-12 adalah sebesar 12 sma. Dengan demikian, hubungan antara sma dan gram dapat diperoleh melalui cara berikut:
12 sma = 1,993 x 10-23 gram
1 sma = 1,661 x 10-24 gram
1 gram = 6,022 x 1023 sma
Hubungan antara massa, massa molar (Ar maupun Mr), dan jumlah partikel zat, dapat ditunjukkan melalui beberapa persamaan berikut:
mol = massa unsur / Ar unsur
mol = massa senyawa / Mr senyawa
mol = jumlah partikel / Bilangan Avogadro
Dengan mengetahui massa atom relatif (Ar) unsur-unsur penyusun senyawa, kita dapat menentukan massa molekul relatif (Mr)senyawa tersebut. Massa molar senyawa (dalam satuan gram) sama dengan massa molekul relatifnya (dalam satuan amu). Sebagai contoh, massa molekul relatif air sebesar 18,016 sma. Dengan demikian, massa molar air adalah 18,016 gram. Hal ini berarti, massa satu mol molekul air adalah sebesar 18,016 gram dan terdapat 6,022 x 1023 molekul air. Bila kita memiliki 54,048 gram air, maka akan setara dengan 54,048 gram / 18,016 (gram/mol) atau 3 mol molekul air. Jumlah molekul yang dimiliki oleh 3 mol molekul air adalah 3 x 6,022 x 1023 molekul air.
Periode tabel periodik
Periode tabel periodik adalah satu baris horizontal pada tabel periodik. Periode ditentukan oleh jumlah orbit elektron yang dimiliki oleh suatu unsur kimia, yang digambarkan sebagai berikut:

b. Periode

Periode unsur pada sistem periodik unsur modem disusun dalam arah horisontal (baris) untuk menunjukkan kelompok unsur yang mempunyai jumlah kulit sama.
Sistem periodik bentuk panjang terdiri atas 7 periode sebagai berikut :
1) Periode 1 = periode sangat pendek berisi 2 unsur, yaitu H dan He
2) Periode 2 = periode pendek berisi 8 unsur
3) Periode 3 = periode pendek berisi 8 unsur
4) Periode 4 = periode panjang berisi 18 unsur
5) Periode 5 = periode panjang berisi 18 unsur
6) Periode 6 = periode sangat panjang berisi 32 unsur
7) Periode 7 = periode yang unsur-unsurnya belum lengkap berisi 30 unsur
Pada periode 6 termasuk periode sangat panjang, yaitu berisi 32 unsur. Golongan IIIB periode 6 berisi 14 unsur dengan sifat mirip yang dinamakan golongan lantanida. Begitu juga golongan IIIB periode 7 berisi 14 unsur dengan sifat mirip dinamakan golongan aktinida. Unsur golongan aktinida dan lantanida biasanya dituliskan terpisah di bawah. Golongan lantanida dan aktinida disebut golongan transisi dalam.
Konfigurasi (susunan) elektron suatu atom berdasarkan kulit-kulit atom tersebut. Setiap kulit
atom dapat terisi elektron maksimum 2n

Jika n = 1 maka berisi 2 elektron
Jika n = 2 maka berisi 8 elektron
Jika n = 3 maka berisi 18 elektron
Jika n = 4 maka berisi 32 elekton
Lambang kulit dimulai dari K, L, M, N dan seterusnya dimulai dari dekat dengan inti.
Elektron disusun sedemikian rupa pada masing-masing kulit dan diisi maksimum sesuai daya
tampung kulit tersebut. Jika masih ada sisa elektron yang tidak dapat ditampung pada kulit
tersebut maka diletakkan pada kulit selanjutnya.
Perhatikan konfigurasi elektron pada unsur dengan nomor atom 19.
Konfigurasi elektronnya bukanlah Hal ini dapat dijelaskan bahwa elektron paling luar maksimum 8, sehingga sisanya harus 1 di
kulit terluar. Begitu pula dengan nomor atom 20.
h. Golongan VIIIA = golongan Gas Mulia
C. SIFAT-SIFAT PERIODIK UNSUR
Meliputi :
1). Jari-Jari Atom
 Adalah jarak dari inti atom sampai ke elektron di kulit terluar.
 Besarnya jari-jari atom dipengaruhi oleh besarnya nomor atom unsur tersebut.
 Semakin besar nomor atom unsur-unsur segolongan, semakin banyak pula jumlah kulit elektronnya, sehingga semakin besar pula jari-jari atomnya.
Jadi : dalam satu golongan (dari atas ke bawah), jari-jari atomnya semakin besar.
 Dalam satu periode (dari kiri ke kanan), nomor atomnya bertambah yang berarti semakin bertambahnya muatan inti, sedangkan jumlah kulit elektronnya tetap. Akibatnya tarikan inti terhadap elektron terluar makin besar pula, sehingga menyebabkan semakin kecilnya jari-jari atom.
Jadi : dalam satu periode (dari kiri ke kanan), jari-jari atomnya semakin kecil.
2). Jari-Jari Ion
 Ion mempunyai jari-jari yang berbeda secara nyata (signifikan) jika dibandingkan dengan jari-jari atom netralnya.
 Ion bermuatan positif (kation) mempunyai jari-jari yang lebih kecil, sedangkan ion bermuatan negatif (anion) mempunyai jari-jari yang lebih besar jika dibandingkan dengan jari-jari atom netralnya.
3). Energi Ionisasi ( satuannya = kJ.mol-1 )
 Adalah energi minimum yang diperlukan atom netral dalam wujud gas untuk melepaskan satu elektron sehingga membentuk ion bermuatan +1 (kation).
 Jika atom tersebut melepaskan elektronnya yang ke-2 maka akan diperlukan energi yang lebih besar (disebut energi ionisasi kedua), dst.
EI 1<>
 Dalam satu golongan (dari atas ke bawah), EI semakin kecil karena jari-jari atom bertambah sehingga gaya tarik inti terhadap elektron terluar semakin kecil. Akibatnya elektron terluar semakin mudah untuk dilepaskan.
 Dalam satu periode (dari kiri ke kanan), EI semakin besar karena jari-jari atom semakin kecil sehingga gaya tarik inti terhadap elektron terluar semakin besar/kuat. Akibatnya elektron terluar semakin sulit untuk dilepaskan.
4). Afinitas Elektron ( satuannya = kJ.mol-1 )
o Adalah energi yang dilepaskan atau diserap oleh atom netral dalam wujud gas apabila menerima sebuah elektron untuk membentuk ion negatif (anion).
o Semakin negatif harga afinitas elektron, semakin mudah atom tersebut menerima/menarik elektron dan semakin reaktif pula unsurnya.
o Afinitas elektron bukanlah kebalikan dari energi ionisasi.
o Dalam satu golongan (dari atas ke bawah), harga afinitas elektronnya semakin kecil.
o Dalam satu periode (dari kiri ke kanan), harga afinitas elektronnya semakin besar.
o Unsur golongan utama memiliki afinitas elektron bertanda negatif, kecuali golongan IIA dan VIIIA.
o Afinitas elektron terbesar dimiliki golongan VIIA.
5). Keelektronegatifan
• Adalah kemampuan suatu unsur untuk menarik elektron dalam molekul suatu senyawa (dalam ikatannya).
• Diukur dengan menggunakan skala Pauling yang besarnya antara 0,7(keelektronegatifan Cs) sampai 4 (keelektronegatifan F).
• Unsur yang mempunyai harga keelektronegatifan besar, cenderungmenerima elektron dan akan membentuk ion negatif.
• Unsur yang mempunyai harga keelektronegatifan kecil, cenderungmelepaskan elektron dan akan membentuk ion positif.
• Dalam satu golongan (dari atas ke bawah), harga keelektronegatifan semakin kecil.
• Dalam satu periode (dari kiri ke kanan), harga keelektronegatifan semakin besar.
6). Sifat Logam dan Non Logam
o Sifat logam dikaitkan dengan keelektropositifan, yaitu kecenderungan atom untuk melepaskan elektron membentuk kation.
o Sifat logam bergantung pada besarnya energi ionisasi ( EI ).
o Makin besar harga EI, makin sulit bagi atom untuk melepaskan elektron dan makin berkurang sifat logamnya.
o Sifat non logam dikaitkan dengan keelektronegatifan, yaitu kecenderungan atom untuk menarik elektron.
o Dalam satu periode (dari kiri ke kanan), sifat logam berkurang sedangkansifat non logam bertambah.
o Dalam satu golongan (dari atas ke bawah), sifat logam bertambahsedangkan sifat non logam berkurang.
o Unsur logam terletak pada bagian kiri-bawah dalam sistem periodik unsur, sedangkan unsur non logam terletak pada bagian kanan-atas.
o Unsur yang paling bersifat non logam adalah unsur-unsur yang terletak padagolongan VIIA, bukan golongan VIIIA.
o Unsur-unsur yang terletak pada daerah peralihan antara unsur logam dengan non logam disebut unsur Metaloid ( = unsur yang mempunyai sifat logam dan sekaligus non logam ). Misalnya : boron dan silikon
7). Kereaktifan
 Kereaktifan bergantung pada kecenderungan unsur untuk melepas ataumenarik elektron.
 Unsur logam yang paling reaktif adalah golongan IA (logam alkali).
 Unsur non logam yang paling reaktif adalah golongan VIIA (halogen).
 Dalam satu periode (dari kiri ke kanan), mula-mula kereaktifan menurun, kemudian semakin bertambah hingga golongan VIIA.
 Golongan VIIIA merupakan unsur yang paling tidak reaktif.
Ionisasi
Energi ionisasi unsur-unsur netral
Ionisasi adalah proses fisik mengubah atom atau molekul menjadi ion dengan menambahkan atau mengurangi partikel bermuatan seperti elektron atau lainnya. Proses ionisasi ke muatan positif atau negatif sedikit berbeda. Ion bermuatan positif didapat ketika elektron yang terikat pada atom atau molekul menyerap energi cukup agar dapat lepas dari potensial listrik yang mengikatnya. Energi yang dibutuhkan tersebut disebut potensial ionisasi. Ion bermuatan negatif didapat ketika elektron bebas bertabrakan dengan atom dan terperangkap dalam kulit atom dengan potensial listrik tertentu. Ionisasi terdiri dari dua tipe: Ionisasi sekuensial dan ionisasi non-sekuensial. Pada fisika klasik, hanya ionisasi sekuensial yang dapat terjadi sehingga disebut ionisasi klasik. Ionisasi non-sekuensial melawan beberapa hukum fisika klasik dan akan dijelaskan di bagian ionisasi kuantum.

Afinitas Elektron

Afinitas elektron merupakan salah satu sifat keperiodikan unsur. Afinitas elektron adalah energi yang dilepaskan oleh suatu atom (dalam wujud gas) ketika menangkap satu elektron membentuk ion negatif. Karena energi dilepas, maka harga afinitas elektron diberi tanda minus.
IKATAN ION

Ikatan ion adalah ikatan yang terbentuk akibat gaya tarik listrik (gaya Coulomb) antara ion yang berbeda. Ikatan ion juga dikenal sebagai ikatan elektrovalen.

Pembentukan Ikatan Ion

Telah diketahui sebelumnya bahwa ikatan antara natrium dan klorin dalam narium klorida terjadi karena adanya serah terima elektron. Natrium merupakan logam dengan reaktivitas tinggi karena mudah melepas elektron dengan energi ionisasi rendah sedangkan klorin merupakan nonlogam dengan afinitas atau daya penagkapan elektron yang tinggi. Apabila terjadi reaksi antara natrium dan klorin maka atom klorin akan menarik satu elektron natrium. Akibatnya natrium menjadi ion positif dan klorin menjadi ion negatif. Adanya ion positif dan negatif memungkinkan terjadinya gaya tarik antara atom sehingga terbentuk natrium klorida. Ikatan ion hanya dapat tebentuk apabila unsur-unsur yang bereaksi mempunyai perbedaan daya tarik electron (keeelektronegatifan) cukup besar. Perbedaan keelektronegati-fan yang besar ini memungkinkan terjadinya serah-terima elektron. Senyawa biner logam alkali dengan golongan halogen semuanya bersifat ionik. Senyawa logam alkali tanah juga bersifat ionik, kecuali untuk beberapa senyawa yang terbentuk dari berilium.

Susunan Senyawa Ion

Aturan oktet menjelaskan bahwa dalam pembentukan natrium klorida, natrium akan melepas satu elektron sedangkan klorin akan menangkap satu elektron. Sehingga terlihat bahwa satu atom klorin membutuhkan satu atom natrium. Inilah kota-kota terbaik di Asia yang akan mengakomodasi berbagai kenakalan Anda.

1. Kerakusan: Taipei, Taiwan

Makanan murah bisa Anda temukan di manapun, siang maupun malam.

Ada 18 jalan di Taipei yang didedikasikan hanya untuk berjualan makanan. Di tempat-tempat yang biasanya akan terdapat halte bus, di Taipei Anda akan menemukan makanan panggang. Trotoar menjadi kios penganan. Bau tahu fermentasi pun memenuhi udara.

Menurut penelitian terbaru dari Synovate, pria Filipina adalah yang paling narsisistik di Asia. Sekitar 48 persen dari pria-pria ini meyakini diri mereka menarik secara seksual.

K-On! (けいおん! Keion!?) is a Japanese four-panel comic strip manga written and illustrated by Kakifly. The manga was serialized in Houbunsha's seinen manga magazine Manga Time Kirara between the May 2007 and October 2010 issues. It was also serialized in Houbunsha's magazine Manga Time Kirara Carat. The manga relaunched in April 2011 with two separate storylines published in Manga Time Kirara and Manga Time Kirara Carat. A 13-episode anime adaptation produced by Kyoto Animation aired in Japan between April and June 2009. An additional original video animation (OVA) episode was released in January 2010. A 26-episode second season, titled K-On!! (with two exclamation marks), aired in Japan between April and September 2010, with an OVA episode released in March 2011. An anime film adaptation has been announced and will be released in Japan on December 3, 2011. The title of the series comes from the Japanese word for light music, keiongaku (軽音楽?), but in the Japanese context is similar to pop music.

K-On!'s story revolves around four Japanese high school girls who join Sakuragaoka Girl's High School's light music club to try to save it from being abolished. However, they are the only members of the club, and at first Yui Hirasawa, the main character, has no experience playing musical instruments or reading sheet music. Eventually, she learns how to be an excellent guitar player. Since then, Yui, bassist Mio Akiyama, drummer Ritsu Tainaka, and keyboardist Tsumugi Kotobuki spend their school days practicing, performing, or just hanging out together. The club is overseen by music teacher Sawako Yamanaka, who eventually becomes their homeroom teacher as well during their final year of high school. In their second year of high school, the club welcomes another guitarist, an underclassman named Azusa Nakano. After Azusa joins, they gain more structure and begin to practice more.

After their third year, Yui, Ritsu, Mio, and Tsumugi graduate and enroll into a university. It is there they join its light music club alongside three other students: Akira Wada, Ayame Yoshida, and Sachi Hayashi. Meanwhile, Azusa continues to run the high school light music club alongside Yui's sister, Ui, their classmate, Jun Suzuki, and new members Sumire Saitō and Okuda.

The five main characters are members of a band, Ho-kago Tea Time (放課後ティータイム Hōkago Tī Taimu?, After School Tea Time), which performs the theme songs in the anime. Toshimi Yotsumoto of ASCII Media Works pointed out that the characters of K-On! have surnames derived from members of the Japanese bands P-Model and The Pillows.[1]

Yui Hirasawa (平沢 唯 Hirasawa Yui?)

Yui is the main character of K-On!. She is one of the members of the light music club and plays a Heritage Cherry Sunburst Gibson Les Paul Standard electric guitar[2][3][4] that she nicknames "Gīta" (ギー太?).[5] She does not get good grades in school (though when properly coached, she can achieve astounding results) and is easily distracted by trivialities (mainly those deemed cute and adorable). Yui is clumsy and easily spaces out most of the time. Yui has shoulder-length, brown hair (a little longer than Ritsu's) which she accessorizes with two yellow hair clips, and brown eyes. She takes a huge liking for any kind of food (though she never gains weight, which is greatly envied by Mugi, Mio,[6] and Sawako[7]). She has a younger sister named Ui, who is very mature and acts as the "older sister" of Yui, taking care of her and keeping her in line.[3] Yui works extremely hard to get better at playing guitar, which is shown in later chapters.[volume & issue needed] During performances, Yui plays with amazing energy and joy, which usually results in great response from the audience.[8][9][10]

Yui is the band's main vocalist and lead guitarist and has absolute pitch—she can tune her guitar perfectly without a tuner, which greatly impresses Azusa, who has played the guitar much longer than Yui.[7][11] She has a very easy-going nature, but has incredible focus and retention when she has a clear goal in sight; unfortunately this is limited to only one subject at a time, and her other skills deteriorate quickly (for example, Yui is at one point pressed to make up failing test scores, and she quickly brings her math skills up to par while allowing her guitar skills to deteriorate.)[12] Despite all of this, Yui is still devoted to her band and will always practice hard enough for the club. At school, she has become quite admired for her great voice. However, she is known to forget her lyrics in mid-performance as well as overdoing things, making her unable to perform sometimes.[8] Mio was the lead vocalist at first, since Yui could not play the guitar and sing at the same time.[13][14] Yui is also known to write childish lyrics as Ui has assisted her in creating them.[15][16]

Ritsu Tainaka (田井中 律 Tainaka Ritsu?)
Voiced by: Satomi Satō (Japanese), Cassandra Lee (English)[17]
Ritsu (or Ricchan, as nicknamed by Yui) is the self-proclaimed president of the light music club and plays a yellow Rick Marotta Signature Yamaha Hipgig drum kit with an add-on floor tom (in the opening credits only) combined with a cymbal set from Avedis Zildjian,[18][2] though is shown playing a white Yamaha Absolute Series drumkit in the anime's closing credits.[2][3] She has an ambiguous yet upbeat personality, much like Yui, but often has trouble remembering important club activities and announcements and gets constantly rebuked by Mio and Nodoka for forgetting to send in important forms concerning the club.[5][14] Ritsu is cheerful, often likes making jokes and is sarcastic most of the time. She is skilled at brainstorming ideas that earn money for the club. Ritsu has shoulder-length, brown hair, with her bangs pulled back with a yellow hairband, and gold-colored eyes. She wears her school jacket open. She says she chose to play the drums because they are "cool", but she then admits that she has trouble playing instruments which involve intricate finger movements, such as the bass, guitar and keyboard.[3][19][20]

She is a childhood friend of Mio and will often take the opportunity to tease her whenever Mio is cowering from something.[21] She is also known to become easily jealous of Mio's other high school friends, even going as far as spying on Mio when on outings with them. Ritsu is always on the go and will stop at nothing for the success of the light music club. Despite her rough mannerisms and speech, she gets cast as Juliet by the majority of her classmates in their class play rendition of Romeo and Juliet and, in the end, manages to act like a proper girl.[22] In the anime, she states her favorite drummer is Keith Moon of The Who.[20] She is skilled at cooking.[23] She has a younger brother named Satoshi (聡?, Voiced by: Mika Itō).[24]

Mio Akiyama (秋山 澪 Akiyama Mio?)
Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa (Japanese), Cristina Valenzuela (English)
Mio is a shy girl who is in the light music club. She plays a left-handed, 3-Color Sunburst Fender Jazz Bass with a tortoiseshell pickguard,[2][3] though is shown playing a Fender Precision Bass in the first manga volume.[19] She uses D'Addario EXL160M medium bass strings.[25] Her bass is given the name Elizabeth later in the anime. While she originally intended to join the literary club, she was forced into the light music club by her childhood friend and the club's president/drummer, Ritsu.[2] She gets excellent grades in school and is often mature and strict especially where Ritsu is involved; her weakness is the macabre and horrific, and she is often incapacitated with fear when stories involving ghosts, blood, injuries,[21] haunted houses,[26] barnacles[18] or other disturbing topics come up. She also has a fear of being in the spotlight and gets embarrassed easily, and is often subject to teasing from Ritsu[21] and Sawako, their club adviser and eventual third-year homeroom teacher. Mio has long, straight black hair and gray eyes (that are angled slightly more than the other characters). She cites that she chose bass since it is not the center of attention in the band, unlike the guitarist.[19] Mio is more technical when it comes to music, and Yui often comes to her when she is in need of more guitar tutorials.

Along with Yui, Mio is one of the band's main vocalists, though given her dislike of being center stage, she tries to avoid taking the lead vocal if possible, generally singing if Yui is unable to.[8][13] She writes most of the songs, although they usually feature some odd and overly girlish lyrics like "Light and Fluffy Time".[13] As she is left-handed, she becomes entranced whenever she sees left-handed instruments, because of their rarity.[5] After their first live performance, the attractive Mio gained a huge fan following (in no small part due to an unfortunate accident that occurred at the end of the show),[26][27] led by an infatuated former student council president.[28] Also resulting from her sudden popularity, most of her classmates voted that she portray Romeo in their class play.[22]

Tsumugi Kotobuki (琴吹 紬 Kotobuki Tsumugi?)
Voiced by: Minako Kotobuki (Japanese), Shelby Lindley (English)[17]
Tsumugi, often referred to as 'Mugi' by her friends, is a wealthy girl with a gentle and sweet personality who plays a Korg Triton Extreme 76-key keyboard, though she is also seen playing a Korg RK-100 keytar in the closing credits of the first season.[2][3] She originally intended to join the choir club, but joins the light music club instead after receiving an invitation and encouragement from both Mio and Ritsu.[2] Tsumugi is considered a piano prodigy since she has been playing the piano since she was four and has experience in winning various piano contests.[19] Mugi has long, pale blonde hair, blue eyes, unusually large eyebrows, which apparently run in her family and a fair complexion that the other characters do not have, but she does not get sunburned. She is the daughter of a company president,[3][19] and her family has several villas in various places around Japan[11][29] (and even one in Finland).[30] Since her father also owns a maid café,[22] she often brings confectionery and an assortment of sweets and pastries to the club room, and she diligently makes tea with a tea set which is kept in their club room. Despite her wealth, she is fascinated by and finds joy in "normal" activities, such as ordering fast food, sharing french fries with her club mates,[2] holding down part-time jobs[24] and haggling over prices.[3][19] Tsumugi displays a rebellious streak occasionally, diverting from her normally well-behaved and mature demeanor to the surprise of the others. She also displays a childlike eagerness from time to time, and possesses unusually high strength, being able to effortlessly carry around her own keyboard, Ritsu's drums, amplifiers,[26][27] and at one point beating an arm-wrestling game in an arcade.

Although she is a sweet and gentle girl, she is often weirdly entranced by the sight of two girls interacting closely together, sometimes imagining something more risqué in her head (both Mio and Ritsu find this awkward at times).[13] The series sometimes indicates that Mugi has a crush on their teacher, Sawako Yamanaka. While a lot of things do not bother her, she is fairly conscious about her weight (just like Mio),[6] and she gets a bit anxious when her family's staff start spoiling her friends during villa visits.[7] She later begins learning how to play the guitar from Azusa.[23]

Azusa Nakano (中野 梓 Nakano Azusa?)
Voiced by: Ayana Taketatsu (Japanese), Christine Marie Cabanos (English)
Azusa is a student in the same year and class as Yui's sister Ui, who joins the light music club and becomes the rhythm guitarist, playing a Fender Mustang electric guitar. She eventually names her guitar Muttan, as it is a Mustang. She is a self-proclaimed novice guitarist who has been playing the guitar since she was in the fourth grade, and her parents are working in a jazz band.[31] She often finds herself bewildered by the tea parties and cosplaying aspects of the club, when she would rather just practice, and is curious about how the club is able to play so well despite their problems and lack of practice.[32] However, she has a certain weakness for cakes and can be calmed down rather easily, sometimes by just being petted.[32] She is constantly a victim of Yui's skinship[7] and is nicknamed Azu-nyan after trying on a pair of cat ears and meowing ("nyan" being the equivalent of "meow" in the Japanese vocabulary).[31] Despite this, Azusa is not too good with cats.[24] Azusa has long black hair, which she wears in pigtails, and brown eyes. While Azusa is talented in guitar, she has trouble singing while playing unlike Yui and Mio.

In the band, she looks up to Mio the most due to her maturity and the fact that she is an experienced bassist, even trying to give Mio chocolate on Valentine's Day.[33] However, she sometimes unintentionally makes remarks concerning Mio's weaknesses, such as her weight. She also finds Mugi very beautiful, and envies her hair and large eyes, and later starts teaching her how to play guitar when the two are alone in the club room.[23] Since joining, Yui comes to her for advice on playing guitar,[34] as well as maintenance. She gets a tan extremely easily, once during their time at the beach[7][11] and another during a music festival (even after applying sunscreen).[35] As a result, she frequently gets sunburned as well. She gets lonely very easily, and often worries that everyone in the club will leave her, as they are one year older and eventually will graduate. Due to this, the rest of the girls buy her a turtle to look after, naming it Ton.[36] Outside of the band, she often hangs out with Ui and Jun whenever the other girls are busy.[37] When the others graduate, she becomes the new light music club president alongside Ui and Jun who decide to join her.[38]

Sawako Yamanaka (山中 さわ子 Yamanaka Sawako?)

Sawako is the adviser for the wind instrument club at the girls' school. An alumna of the school and a member of the light music club in her student days, she does not want people to find out that she was formerly a member of a death metal band called Death Devil (of which she was both lead guitar and vocalist and went by the stage name of "Catherine"[10]), thus she covers up by being mild and gentle to her coworkers and especially to students. She is forced to be the adviser of the light music club, as Ritsu blackmails her after the girls learn of her past.[14][21] However, she is able to juggle being the adviser for the wind instrument club as well, even as the story progresses. Though she has a mature and gentle demeanor in the school, Sawako (affectionately addressed as "Sawa-chan" by both Ritsu and Yui) displays a totally different, completely authentic character when she is alone with the light music club. In reality, she is rather wild, lazy, and is quite an irresponsible teacher who enjoys dressing up the light music club in (sometimes embarrassing) cosplay costumes (like French maid uniforms), much to the dismay of Mio.[39] She gets a thrill out of the rare moments where she is praised for her work.[40]

She names the club band "Ho-kago Tea Time" after the members take too long deciding on a name themselves.[40] In the anime, she once pitches in for Yui with her white Epiphone "1958" Korina Flying V electric guitar.[9] She becomes the girls' homeroom teacher in their third year, and puts Nodoka and all the band members (except Azusa, since she is a grade lower) in the same class, so she does not have to remember as many names.[4] An episode in the second anime season reveals that she owned one of the first Gibson SG models (from around 1960 with a custom stoptail bridge) which is later sold.[36] Due to her relation to the club members, the other students in her class start to call her Sawa-chan as well, ruining her image as a mild-mannered teacher. Her image is further ruined after Death Devil is temporarily reunited at a wedding reception for a high school alumnus. Regardless, her popularity with the students remains unchanged.[41] In spite of her laziness, she still proves herself to be an able mentor, as shown by her willingness to coach Yui as the lead singer[13] and attending their performances.[8] Her music abilities apparently have not dulled over the years, as she is able to substitute for Yui at the school festival at almost no notice without the assistance of a music score, even without any prior practicing of the band's song.[9] Sawako is also very perceptive: she immediately sees through Ui's disguise when she impersonates her sister and on several occasions boasts to the club that there is nothing she cannot see.[9]

Ui Hirasawa (平沢 憂 Hirasawa Ui?)
Voiced by: Madoka Yonezawa (Japanese), Xanthe Huynh (English)
Ui is Yui's younger sister, who begins the story as a third-year junior high school student, but later enters Yui's high school the following year in the same class as Azusa.[8] Unlike her older sister, Ui is mature, responsible, and handles household chores well, though she still shares a strong relationship with Yui and has a great deal of love and respect for her older sister.[6][42] Despite being a year younger than Yui, she is nearly identical to her with her hair down and is even once able to fool the club.[9] She plays the organ,[37][43] and is also a fast learner, able to learn playing the guitar after a few days' practice.[9][44] She takes particularly good care of Yui and strives to look after her even at the risk of her own health.[15][16] Ui is actually considered as the ultimate groupie for her sister's band and supports them with all her heart and occasionally provides a narrative to the story.[37] She eventually joins the light music club along with Jun at the end of the series.[38]

Nodoka Manabe (真鍋 和 Manabe Nodoka?)
Voiced by: Chika Fujitō (Japanese), Laura Bailey (English)
Nodoka is Yui's childhood friend and confidant who is a member of the school's student council. As a normal, well-mannered and intelligent girl, she is generally taken aback by the light music club's odd behavior, and easily gets annoyed with Ritsu whenever she forgets to fill in the club's application forms.[5][14] She shares the same class as Mio in their second year, who appreciates her companionship tremendously, she being the only person Mio knows in her class.[45] In her third year, she becomes the student council president and is also in the same class as the other third year club members. She gradually becomes the president of Mio's fan club through unknown circumstances (possibly out of her control), even when she originally turned down the position. Nodoka chooses to go to a national university as opposed to the same college as Yui and the others.

Jun Suzuki (鈴木 純 Suzuki Jun?)
Voiced by: Yoriko Nagata
Jun is Azusa's and Ui's classmate who often hangs out with the latter. Ui tries to get her to join the light music club but ultimately fails due to a strange visit to the club room.[8][39] She instead plays a Yamaha Sbv500 bass in the jazz club[37] and is one of Mio's admirers. However, she starts to regret not joining the light music club when she hears about all the activities they do and eventually joins the light music club at the end of the series.[38] It is revealed that she can also play guitar as well as bass.[46] She has a pet cat in the anime series.[24]

Sumire Saitō (斉藤 菫 Saitō Sumire?)
Sumire is a shy blonde girl who meets Azusa, Ui and Jun after Yui and the others graduate. She is a freshmen, two years below the other light music club members.[46] She is currently residing in the Kotobuki household and originally came to the light music room to try and retrieve Tsumugi's teaset that was left behind after she graduated. After being scared off a few times by Sawako, she eventually agrees to join the light music club. Similar to Tsumugi, she is quite talented at preparing tea.[47]

Okuda (奥田?)
Another freshman in the same class as Sumire. Generally poor at physical activities, she goes through several trial runs through various clubs before deciding to join the light music club as she feels it is where she can try her best.[47]

Akira Wada (和田 晶 Wada Akira?)
A new character introduced in the restarted manga who is in a band called OnNaGumi (女組 "Gang of Girls"?)with her friends Ayame and Sachi. Akira joins the university's light music club alongside Yui and her friends. She has short black hair and tries to look intimidating. She studies in the Education department along with Yui. She is easily irritated to a degree but finds herself in a similar position to Azusa from high school as Yui seems to enjoy hugging her. She plays a black Gibson Les Paul electric guitar which she nicknames "Rosalie".[48]

Sachi Hayashi (林 幸 Hayashi Sachi?)
One of Akira's friends, who has long hair. She is OnNaGumi's bassist and is in the same department as Mio.[48]

Ayame Yoshida (吉田 菖 Yoshida Ayame?)
Another one of Akira's friends, who has short blonde hair. She is OnNaGumi's drummer and is in the same department as Ritsu.[48]

Megumi Sokabe (曽我部 恵 Sokabe Megumi?)
Voiced by: Asumi Kodama
Megumi is the former student council president and founder of the Mio Fan Club. Nodoka later succeeds Megumi in both positions. She stalks Mio during her last few days in high school because she wanted to see Mio one more time. The band offers her a song as a graduation gift.[28] She goes to the same woman's university in which Yui and her friends later enroll and lives in the same dorm as them.

K-On! began as a four-panel comic-strip manga written and illustrated by Kakifly. The manga was originally serialized in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara manga magazine between the May 2007[49] and October 2010 issues, ending on September 9, 2010.[50] The manga also appeared as a guest bimonthly serialization in Manga Time Kirara's sister magazine Manga Time Kirara Carat starting with the October 2008 issue.[51] The manga relaunched in April 2011 in two separate magazines. Chapters published in Manga Times Kirara, starting with the May 2011 issue released on April 8, 2011, focus on the main cast as they attend college, while chapters published in Manga Time Kirara Carat, starting with the June 2011 issue released on April 28, 2011, focus on Azusa, Ui, and Jun as they continue the light music club.[52][53]

Four tankōbon volumes were released between April 26, 2008 and September 27, 2010. The manga was licensed by Yen Press for English release, with the first volume released in North America on November 30, 2010.[54][55] In Indonesia, the series is licensed by Elex Media Komputindo. There is an anthology entitled Minna de Untan!, which features several guest strips from various artists. An official anthology series, K-On! Anthology Comic (けいおん!アンソロジーコミック Keion! Ansorojī Komikku?), began sale from November 27, 2009, with four volumes released as of May 27, 2011. An illustration book with official art and fan art from well known dōjin artists was released on January 27, 2010.

A 13-episode anime adaptation directed by Naoko Yamada, written by Reiko Yoshida, and produced by Kyoto Animation aired between April 3 and June 26, 2009 on TBS in Japan.[56] The episodes began airing on subsequent networks at later dates which include BS-TBS, MBS, and CBC. The TBS airings are in 4:3 ratio, and the series began airing in widescreen on BS-TBS on April 25, 2009. Seven BD/DVD compilation volumes were released by Pony Canyon between July 29, 2009 and January 20, 2010. An additional original video animation (OVA) episode was released with the final BD/DVD volumes on January 20, 2010.[57] Animax has aired the anime in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Both an English-subtitled and English-dubbed version by Red Angel Media began airing on March 16, 2010 on Animax Asia.[58] At their industry panel at Anime Expo 2010, anime distributor Bandai Entertainment announced that they have acquired K-On! for a DVD and Blu-ray Disc release,[59] with Bang Zoom! Entertainment producing an English dub for the show.[60] The series will be released over four volumes in standard and limited editions for each format,[17][61] starting on April 26, 2011.[62] Manga Entertainment will release the series in the UK, starting with individual DVD volumes during 2011 followed by a Blu-ray series box set in 2012.[63][64]

It was displayed on screen at the Let's Go live concert in Yokohama, Japan on December 30, 2009 that a second season would be produced.[65] The second season, titled K-On!! (with two exclamation marks), aired with 26 episodes on TBS in Japan between April 7, 2010 and September 28, 2010.[66][67] An additional OVA episode was released with the final BD/DVD volumes on March 16, 2011.[68] This season has also aired on Animax Asia starting October 20, 2010.[69]

At the end of the second anime series on September 28, 2010, a film adaptation of K-On! was announced. It was announced during the K-On!! Come With Me!! live concert and on the official anime website on February 20, 2011 that the film will be released in Japan on December 3, 2011. It is set to be an original story according to Akemi Kanaya's Twitter account and is being produced by Kyoto Animation with Naoko Yamada as the director.[70][71][72]

The first season anime's opening theme is "Cagayake! Girls" by Aki Toyosaki with Yōko Hikasa, Satomi Satō and Minako Kotobuki. The ending theme is "Don't Say 'Lazy'" by Hikasa with Toyosaki, Satō and Kotobuki. The opening and ending theme singles were released on April 22, 2009. A single containing the insert song "Fuwa Fuwa Time" (ふわふわ時間 Light and Fluffy Time?) used in episode six was released on May 20, 2009. A series of character song singles have been released containing songs sung by the voice actresses of the five main characters. The singles for Yui (by Toyosaki) and Mio (by Hikasa) were released on June 17, 2009. The singles for Ritsu (by Satō) and Tsumugi (by Kotobuki) were delayed, but later released together with the single for Azusa (by Ayana Taketatsu) on August 26, 2009. The singles for Ui Hirasawa (by Madoka Yonezawa) and Nodoka Manabe (by Chika Fujitō) were released on October 21, 2009. The anime's original soundtrack, largely composed by Hajime Hyakkoku, was released on June 3, 2009. The four songs highlighted in episode eight of the anime were released on the mini album Ho-kago Tea Time (放課後ティータイム After School Tea Time?) on July 22, 2009. The single "Maddy Candy" by Sawako's band Death Devil was released on August 12, 2009.[73]

The second season anime's first opening theme is "Go! Go! Maniac" and the first ending theme is "Listen!!"; both songs are sung by Toyosaki, Hikasa, Satō, Kotobuki, and Taketatsu. The singles containing the songs were released on April 28, 2010. From episode 14 onwards, the respective opening and ending themes are "Utauyo!! Miracle" and "No, Thank You!", both by Toyosaki, Hikasa, Satō, Kotobuki, and Taketatsu. The singles containing these songs were released on August 4, 2010.[74] The single "Pure Pure Heart" also sung by Toyosaki, Hikasa, Satō, Kotobuki, and Taketatsu was released on June 2, 2010. Another single, "Love", by Sawako's band Death Devil was released by on June 23, 2010. A single sung by Toyosaki, "Gohan wa Okazu/U&I", was released on September 8, 2010.[75] The composer Bice who wrote the song "Gohan wa Okazu" died on July 26, 2010 of a heart attack.[76] A second set of character song singles were released, starting with the singles for Yui and Mio on September 21, 2010. The show's second album, Ho-kago Tea Time II, was released on both normal double CD and limited edition that came with a cassette tape on October 27, 2010.[77] The second set of singles for Ritsu, Tsumugi, and Azusa were released on November 17, 2010. The set of singles for Jun (by Yoriko Nagata), Ui (by Yonezawa), and Nodoka (by Fujitō) were released on January 19, 2011. The singles and albums were released by Pony Canyon.

A rhythm video game titled K-On! Hōkago Live!! (けいおん! 放課後ライブ!! Keion! Hōkago Raibu!!?), developed by Sega for the PlayStation Portable, was released on September 30, 2010.[78] The gameplay involves the player matching button presses in time with music featured in the anime. The game supports local multiplayer for up to five PSPs.[79] The game features 19 songs from the first anime season and first set of character song CDs. The player can customize the clothing, hair style and accessories of the characters, plus customization of the light music room and Yui's bedroom. There is also a custom track maker.

The first manga volume of K-On! was the 30th highest-selling manga volume in Japan for the week of April 27 and May 3, 2009, having sold over 26,500 volumes that week.[80] The following week, the first and second manga volumes were the 19th and 20th highest-selling manga volumes in Japan, having sold 23,200 and 22,500 volumes each the week of May 4 and May 10, 2009. As of May 2009, the first two manga volumes each sold about 136,000 copies each.[81] The third volume sold over 120,000 copies the week of December 14–20, 2009,[82] and became the 46th top-selling manga for the first half of 2010 in Japan (ending May 23), selling over 328,000 copies.[83]

The single for the first anime's opening theme, "Cagayake! Girls", debuted at fourth in the ranking on the Oricon weekly singles chart, selling approximately 62,000 copies. The ending theme "Don't Say 'Lazy'" debuted at second in the ranking, selling 67,000 copies.[84] It was also awarded Best Theme Song at the 2009 (14th) Animation Kobe Awards.[85] Additionally, "Cagayake! Girls" and "Don't Say 'Lazy'" were certified Gold and Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for 100,000 and 250,000 full-track ringtone digital music downloads (Chaku Uta Full), respectively.[86][87] The mini album Ho-kago Tea Time debuted at No. 1 on the Oricon weekly CD albums charts selling 67,000 copies, making it the first image song album credited to fictional anime characters that reached the highest position.[88] The second anime's opening theme "Go! Go! Maniac" and ending theme "Listen!!" debuted at No. 1 and No. 2 in their first week of release on the Oricon singles chart, selling over 83,000 and 76,000 copies, respectively.[89] "Go! Go! Maniac" became the first anime image song to ever top the singles chart and the band also became the first female vocalists to occupy the top two spots on the singles chart in 26 years since Seiko Matsuda in 1983.[90][91] The season's second ending and opening themes, "No, Thank You!" and "Utauyo! Miracle" respectively, sold 87,000 and 85,000 in their first week and ranked at No. 2 and No. 3 in the Oricon charts respectively, only being beaten by SMAP's single, "This is Love".[92] "No, Thank You!" and "Utauyo! Miracle" were certified Gold by the RIAJ in August 2010 for 100,000 copies shipped.[93] The single "Gohan wa Okazu"/"U&I" debuted at No. 3 on the Oricon singles chart, selling 53,000 in its first week.[94] The album Ho-kago Tea Time II debuted at No. 1 on the Oricon weekly CD albums charts selling 127,000 copies.[95]

The first Japanese DVD volume of the anime series sold around 8,000 copies to debut seventh in the ranking on the Oricon charts for the week of July 29, 2009.[96] The Blu-ray Disc release of the first volume sold about 33,000 copies in the same week, to top the Oricon BD charts. In August 2009, the first volume of K-On! was the top-selling television anime Blu-ray Disc in Japan, having surpassed the previous record holder Macross Frontier, which sold approximately 22,000 copies of its first volume. It was the second best-selling Blu-ray Disc in Japan, trailing only Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, with around 49,000 copies.[96] However, in October 2009, the first volume of Bakemonogatari surpassed K-On!'s previous record, having sold 37,000 copies at that time.[97] Later, with the release of K-On!! volume 3, total BD sales for the series have outsold Bakemonogatari.[98] K-On! received a Best TV Animation Award at the 2010 Tokyo International Anime Fair.[99] K-On!! won the Best Television award at the 2010 (15th) Animation Kobe Awards.[100] Both series have sold a combined total of over 520,000 BD copies as of February 20, 2011.[101]

At the beginning of September 2010, the Kyoto prefectural government began using K-On!! to promote the census and encourage people to be counted.[102] Sharp and Bandai will jointly launch a calculator with designs of the characters from K-On!.[103]
